The Second Tashkent Medical Institute was originally a part of Tashkent Medical Academy- The TMA is one of Uzbekistan's oldest and largest universities, as well as the country's centre for medical education and research in medicine and life sciences.

It began as the Turkestan State University's Faculty of Medicine in 1920, was renamed the Tashkent Medical Institute in 1931, and then split into two separate Medical Universities in 1990: the First Tashkent State Medical Institute and the Second Tashkent State Medical Institute. By Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov, in 2005, the Tashkent Medical Academy was established by merging the First and Second Tashkent State Medical Institutes.
